Tierney Gearon: World Renown Artist and Photographer

As one of the most influential photographers of our time—having been discovered by Charles Saatchi,Tierney Gearon has established a career capturing moments, timelessly and accurately. Little did I know, before meeting her a few years ago when she took photos for my website, she also traveled the world for half a decade modeling. While she was pursuing her first passion, Ballet in Utah, a European modeling agency discovered her and helped ignite a life into the modeling world. Over time her interests grew and it was through her pastime of taking photos that she was encouraged to extend and grow her skills into and beyond the industry, ultimately to become a professional photographer. Not only does her resume and accolades within photography blow me away, she also is a woman with a powerful story that has inspired me deeply. As a professional working on the other side of the lens—and successfully, it’s apparent she is a woman of true talent. But In addition to it all, her dedication to her family is what I might admire the most. With four beautiful children whom she has evidently encourages to follow their passion no matter what, It’s apparent in the way she speaks of them that they are her gold. When you are in her home you can even feel the free spirit of great energy and greater love and it’s absolutely contagious. I had a chance to catch up with Tierney and ask her a few questions! Here is what we talked about…..

JL: How would you describe your style?
Tierney Gearon: Creative, artistic, bohemian and colorful.
 
JL: What are your must-have beauty products?
TG: I have terribly dry skin—so all my organic oils are a must.
 
JL: Do you have any daily rituals that you can’t live without?
TG: Exercise is an absolute must. I mostly hike and do yoga–we also just moved to a beach farm
lifestyle and so my new favorite thing is to walk the goats and sit with the chickens; it keeps me grounded continually.

JL: What has been the most exciting part of your career so far?
TG: Commercial photography wise, the biggest challenge I have ever had to do is when I had to shoot the Oscar Issue for the New York Times Magazine; we had to also shoot little vignette videos. I had an hour to do each person and it was the first time I had ever done film so I had to come up with the concepts and make it all happen. Working with such a large crew was also not easy, I am a one woman show, but we did it and we did an amazing job!
 
JL: Being a mother of four, how do you balance your work, creativity and motherhood?
TG: I don’t know, some how I just do it! I just don’t think about it. I take care of myself but my children come first hands down.
 
JL: As a woman who has achieved so much, how important has the support of other women been to your career?
TG: I think the biggest support is the belief in one’s self and taking care of yourself. I know what it feels like to support my female friends and I am very empowered by it, in turn I’m encouraged to support myself.

JL: Who has been most inspirational to you in your work and life?
TG: My own life story. My family and children inspire me.
 
JL: What advice would you give to other women you wish someone would have told you?
TG: Learn how to take care of yourself and to say “yes” to as much as you can without hurting yourself or others!

Benefits of the Sea

Algae and seaweed have more concentrated nutrition than any vegetables grown on land and thus have benefits ranging from possessing power to preventing disease to imparting beauty and health.  Mainly used in diets from Asian culture, edible seaweed comes in about over 20 types and within those types some are found to have more calcium than cheese, more iron than beef, and more protein than eggs. With a usual rich source of micronutrients, seaweed traditionally holds healing properties that are said to include everything from lowering cholesterol, detoxifying heavy metals, reducing water retention, and aiding in weight loss. To make the most of what seaweed can offer, here are three good reasons why and how to eat your sea veggies!

1. Wakame: Beat Bloating

Most known as the goods floating in miso soup, wakame looks like slippery spinach. As a diuretic (helps reduce the amount of water in the body) wakame prevents bloating and is packed with osteoporosis-preventing calcium and magnesium. The wakame benefits don’t end here – this seaweed is also high in important trace minerals and is one of the few non-animal sources of vitamin B12.

How to Indulge: Try it in miso soup. Or soak the wakame for a few minutes to reconstitute, then chop, and turn into a salad. I recommend pairing it with cucumbers and rice vinegar.

2. Nori: Super Skin

Best known as the outer wrap of sushi rolls, nori is a great snack for skin health. Just one sheet of nori has the same amount of omega-3s as two whole avocados. The omega-3s help create a natural oil barrier on your skin, which helps to reduce acne and dry skin, particularly helpful during the dry, heated winter months.

How to indulge: Make your own simple sushi by covering an open sheet of nori with brown or white rice. Then add shredded veggies, thinly sliced avocado, and any other raw vegetable that strikes your palette. Roll it all up and dip in sesame oil and ginger sauce.

3. Kombu: Mega Metabolism

Kombu is valuable for its high content of iodine, which is needed to produce two important thyroid hormones that control the metabolism. Many people are thyroid deficient and the iodine in kombu can help such scarcity. In addition, there is a pigment in kombu called fucoxanthin, which may boost production of a protein involved in fat metabolism.

How to Indulge: Try simmering chopped kombu in your soups until soft – or use it to make a Japanese version of chicken broth called dashi. To make this, cook 4 cups of water over low heat, and then add 8 inches of kombu that has been cut in half. Simmer over low heat and then strain the stock. Add dried shiitake mushrooms for an extra boost of flavor!
