Tierney Gearon: World Renown Artist and Photographer

As one of the most influential photographers of our time—having been discovered by Charles Saatchi,Tierney Gearon has established a career capturing moments, timelessly and accurately. Little did I know, before meeting her a few years ago when she took photos for my website, she also traveled the world for half a decade modeling. While she was pursuing her first passion, Ballet in Utah, a European modeling agency discovered her and helped ignite a life into the modeling world. Over time her interests grew and it was through her pastime of taking photos that she was encouraged to extend and grow her skills into and beyond the industry, ultimately to become a professional photographer. Not only does her resume and accolades within photography blow me away, she also is a woman with a powerful story that has inspired me deeply. As a professional working on the other side of the lens—and successfully, it’s apparent she is a woman of true talent. But In addition to it all, her dedication to her family is what I might admire the most. With four beautiful children whom she has evidently encourages to follow their passion no matter what, It’s apparent in the way she speaks of them that they are her gold. When you are in her home you can even feel the free spirit of great energy and greater love and it’s absolutely contagious. I had a chance to catch up with Tierney and ask her a few questions! Here is what we talked about…..

JL: How would you describe your style?
Tierney Gearon: Creative, artistic, bohemian and colorful.
 
JL: What are your must-have beauty products?
TG: I have terribly dry skin—so all my organic oils are a must.
 
JL: Do you have any daily rituals that you can’t live without?
TG: Exercise is an absolute must. I mostly hike and do yoga–we also just moved to a beach farm
lifestyle and so my new favorite thing is to walk the goats and sit with the chickens; it keeps me grounded continually.

JL: What has been the most exciting part of your career so far?
TG: Commercial photography wise, the biggest challenge I have ever had to do is when I had to shoot the Oscar Issue for the New York Times Magazine; we had to also shoot little vignette videos. I had an hour to do each person and it was the first time I had ever done film so I had to come up with the concepts and make it all happen. Working with such a large crew was also not easy, I am a one woman show, but we did it and we did an amazing job!
 
JL: Being a mother of four, how do you balance your work, creativity and motherhood?
TG: I don’t know, some how I just do it! I just don’t think about it. I take care of myself but my children come first hands down.
 
JL: As a woman who has achieved so much, how important has the support of other women been to your career?
TG: I think the biggest support is the belief in one’s self and taking care of yourself. I know what it feels like to support my female friends and I am very empowered by it, in turn I’m encouraged to support myself.

JL: Who has been most inspirational to you in your work and life?
TG: My own life story. My family and children inspire me.
 
JL: What advice would you give to other women you wish someone would have told you?
TG: Learn how to take care of yourself and to say “yes” to as much as you can without hurting yourself or others!

I am so excited to share my recent interview I had with this beautiful soul. Here’s what we talked about; learn more at @localrose

January Labs: What are your must have beauty products?

Shiva Rose: I use my own beauty products, oils, balms and serums that I create in my studio using various essential oils and beeswax. For makeup I use RMS products, and I also like your lovely ones January! I also use Egyptian magic for a glowing look.

 

JL: How would you describe your style?

SR: My style is probably eclectic bohemian with a touch of classic. I love to mix new shoes and bags with a vintage dress. I also like to dress in terms of telling story or how I am feeling. Lately it’s been a new age crystal goddess look with crystals and wither white or pale rose Grecian dresses.

 

JL: What are your daily rituals?

SR: Upon waking I mist my face with rose water that I have made or the kind I sell on my site. Then before I take care of my daughters and animals, I make a pot of Living tea, which is from old growth teas. I drink a cup in silence and reflect on what my day will bring. Later in the day I have a tea and raw cacao chocolate around 4pm. If time permits I will do a Kundalini yoga set and chant some mantras. I close each evening with a bath that has some of my sea salts that I make. Rituals, I feel are so vital for a balanced and peaceful life. Thank you for asking.

 

JL: Do you have any natural skincare remedies you can’t live without?

SR: Oatmeal baths for any skin rashes or bug bites!

JL: I love your blog. Your recipes are scrumptious, what is your favorite simple go to dish?

SR: I like to cook. I just got myself a slow cooker and that has been a dream! Yesterday I made a pot of black bean soup and it was so easy. Just fry up some onions, garlic, tomatoes and chili powder, smoked paprika and cumin and place all in the pot with broth and in three hours there is an amazing soup! I also make a lot of kale, cabbage salads with an almond, cilantro, bragg, olive oil dressing!

 

JL: You epitomize natural beauty. What led you to create your lovely rose oil products?

SR: As I was reviewing products for my blog my desire to learn about the properties of flowers and plants began to expand. I also was so worried about the toxic content of regular conventional products. I wanted to create something luxurious and safe! 

 

JL: Who has been most inspirational to you in your work and life?

SR: I was an actress for many, many years and I think reading classic books and watching classic films shaped me for those chapters. I am now so inspired by the incredible community of women and sisters that I see creating beauty in this world, and in a way that is bringing healing to our planet. I am also so moved and inspired by organic farmers who choose to grow real, wholesome food in the face of corrupt big agro companies. Vandana Shiva and Robyn O’Brien who are fighting for our seeds inspire me as well. They have taught me that to be an activist can go hand in hand with being a feminine woman.

 

JL: What advice would you give to other women you wish someone would have given you early in your life?

SR: Don’t take things personally and take chances life is too short to wonder, “what if?”

 

Q & A: Caroline Vreeland: Flawless Songstress

I am so excited to share this interview with Caroline Vreeland. She is not only an incredibly gorgeous, talented, and smart woman, she is a force. It is rare to meet such a beauty with an inner kindness that is so palpable. She is an inspiration and I am so excited to watch this babe’s career skyrocket! Oh and by the way … she happens to be Diana Vreeland’s great granddaughter—one of the most formidable women of all time!

JL: How would you describe your style? 

CV: Minimal, boyish, easy

JL: What are your must-have beauty products?

CV: Right now I love January Labs eye cream, Korean collagen eye pads, Aquaphor on everything, Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizing balm, & Glossier rose water spray

JL: Do you have any daily rituals that you can’t live without?
CV: Face timing my sister, green tea from Alfred, and taking a selfie with my boyfriend for the
app “Everyday.”

JL: What has been the most exciting part of your career so far?

CV: Having people come up to me on the street and tell me my music has meant something special to them! And shooting for Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion book (twice!) was a huge milestone for me as well.

JL: What inspires most of the songs you write about?

CV: It can be anything from a fight with a friend, to the art I see, or the book I’m reading; anything & everything inspires me. I’m like a freak with too much empathy. For instance, I will see someone in a painting. A farm girl maybe. Then I’ll daydream about what her life was like-no … it’s more like I’ll feel her life as if it were my own. Deeply. I really feel these people! Then I’ll build a world in my mind of what a day in her life is like or what she’s going through, and I the somehow write a song about it! So although something may not have happened to me specifically, I can truly feel like I’ve been there, felt those emotions, so, in a way, all I come across becomes a part of me.

JL: As a woman who is building a career, how important is the support of other women?Who has been most inspirational to you in your work and life?

CV: Successful, confident women provide a sense of security to those searching to find love for themselves. One of the most inspirational things that has happened to me is having girls write messages to me explaining how I’ve given them a sense of pride in their bodies or big boobs, or the way they carry themselves, or in the idea that they can express themselves the way they want to. The number of followers one has on Instagram doesn’t matter. What matters is that I could have some kind of influence on women. One girl wrote to me last week saying she’s always hated the scar on her face but since seeing how I embrace the scar on my forehead, she’s learned to find the beauty in hers. This brought tears to my eyes. This, to me, is the importance of influence through social media.

JL: What advice would you give to other women you wish someone would have told you?

CV: Never give up on what matters to you, never give in to what you are not, and never compromise who you are at your core. Be kind to everyone and I mean everyone because you never know what someone’s truly going through, and a small kindness from you could change their day or even their life.

JL: Lastly, your Great Grandmother Diana Vreeland is one of my favorite icons of
all time, how has she influenced your life?

CV: I’ve said this before but it is the bare bones truth. Nanina (as we call Diana in my family) is in my blood, a part me, flowing through me. It sounds crazy but I know she is inside me, guiding me. Because of her I am not afraid to be imperfect and brave.

Springtime Veggies

Spring is in full swing and your trip to the grocery may feel less familiar than it usually does seeing that certain vegetables are either plentiful or non-existent. To ensure you eat the best of the best, we want to remind you which spring veggies should be enjoyed this season and what benefits they reap.

The Radish

Unassuming, this member of the mustard family can be found as red, purple or black. Red-skinned radishes are the most popular (and our favorite), but you can also find daikon radishes, which have a milder flavor than the red-skinned. Just 20 calories, one cup of radishes will do the trick for a light snack and will serve an excellent source of vitamin C. It’s also brimming with calcium and potassium.

The Beet

These red gems contain betaine, the same substance that is used in certain treatments of depression while also containing trytophan, which creates a sense of well-being, which relaxes the mind–similar to chocolate. In addition, beets serve as a tonic for the liver, which purifies the blood. AND on top of it all, tastes delicious.

The Carrot

A common ingredient with your hummus, carrots will start appearing in early May and is an excellent source of beta-carotene (a powerful antioxidant that helps maintain eyesight and protect against heart disease and certain forms of cancer). Carrots are also chock-full of potassium, fiber and vitamins K and C. And although you are used to the orange ones, we suggest trying the puple, yellow and white ones to mix it up. Benefits are the same, taste slightly different!

The Spinach 

With so many greens to choose from, we hope you go for the spinach this season. Spring and fall are the peak seasons for this popular leafy green. Just one cup of this magic is twice the recommended daily amount of vitamin K. It’s also packed with vitamin A and provides plenty of vitamin C, folate and manganese as well.

Break The Habits

A new month, a new beginning to remind yourself, your skin needs protecting, so here are some tips to refresh your mind with as you step into the new Spring Season and how breaking your habits can make all the difference.

Washing too much

If your skin is dry skin, try and lather up less often, since doing so strips away natural oils. A creamy or oil-based cleanser at night (they’re gentler on dry skin) is best to use and be sure to rinse with just water when you wake up. (This way, you’ll retain more of your own moisturizing oils). Side note: removing make up will always be key in keeping your skin in the best condition.

Turn the TV off

Bright screens have the power to suppress melatonin, a hormone that makes us sleepy and regulates our circadian rhythms. When melatonin levels decrease, your circadian rhythm gets thrown off which make your skin cells work inefficiently, causing more wrinkles and dullness over time. And because sleep is also important when it comes to keeping your skin healthy, try and wind down by reading a book or meditating.

Tell us about your pillow

Speaking of sleep, what kind of pillow do you sleep on? Believe it or not, but our pillows collect oil, dead skin cells, bacteria, and excess night creams so as we toss and turn, all of that is deposited right into our pores. Tip: change your pillowcases at least once a week and also be sure to swap out the regular cotton version for something smoother, like satin, silk, or Egyptian cotton. Rough pillowcases can actually cause wrinkles.

 In moderation, your favorite things: alcohol and sugar

Unfortunately, consuming too much sugar, salt, caffeine, and alcohol will show on your face.  Take alcohol, a huge dehydrator and inflamer for your skin. This will consequently make your skin dull and blotchy. In addition, try and avoid sugary foods since they break down collagen and elastin in the skin which can and will produce wrinkles.

Last but not least…

This is often overlooked, but be sure to get your moles check each year. If you’re forgetful, schedule it near events you’ll remember, like your anniversary or birthday. No matter how thorough you may be when examining your own skin, mole checks are nonnegotiable. A little effort for a lot of cause.

Latest Obsession: Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds are a super food that you should know about! When your cells are nourished, your skin glows. These little black seeds are the highest natural source of omega-3s, a type of fatty acid that benefits your skin by helping to strengthen cell membranes’ barriers that allow water and nutrients in while keeping toxins out.

To help you get into our current Chia craze, here are two great recipes. One that will benefit your internal health and for consumption, the other, an application recipe to benefit your skin!

Vanilla Chia Pudding, makes one serving. 

2 tablespoons chia seeds

1/2 cup coconut milk

1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

a pinch of salt

1 tablespoon honey

Directions

In a small bowl or jar combine the first four ingredients. Give it a good stir and refrigerate for at least one hour. After the first thirty minutes give the mixture a stir, so it doesn’t clump together. Once you’re ready to eat, stir in the honey (add more if you don’t think it’s sweet enough) and top with your favorite fruit or chopped nuts.

Chia seed face scrub

1/2 cup coconut oil

1 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp chia seeds

Directions

Mix the ingredients together before applying to a damp face. Allow the mixture to set for two minutes before using a wet washcloth to remove. Splash cold water on your face when you’ve finished.

Jan Thoughts: The Oscars

From time to time, we will be sharing a quick thought from our founder, January Olds. To kick off this introductory series, what better way than to talk about the magic that is the Oscars? Here are some glitzy thoughts:

 

This last Sunday, most circled around their television to watch the annually celebrated Oscars. Whether a movie lover or a fashionista,  I know I loved watching the Oscars because of it’s overall presentation of both beauty and talent. Strangely enough, it’s a time a year I pay extra close attention to skin; yep, of course; I just can’t help it.

A woman who caught my eye specifically was Cate Blanchett. I love her in general for her brilliant acting and presence on film but couldn’t help notice how stunning she was (AND WITH BARELY ANY MAKE UP!)

Lets perhaps take note from the lovely Cate who has inspired others (and me) in so many ways. Whether it in the media and striving to be a positive influence to women, or it’s the effortless style and poise she so displayed especially a couple nights ago, may we be women who strive and focus on the kind of beauty that is just that. Let’s not try and look younger over looking good and healthy for our age. And let’s remember that beauty is from within–with or without an Oscar in your hand.

Love and ALL it’s Beauty

This month, though inspired by a national holiday we were reminded by a sustaining truth that love is truly what reflects beauty in it’s most whole and pure form. We at January Labs want to provide not only the best, conscious and purifying products for your skin, but also to provide you with an overall sense of beauty in it’s external AND internal facets.

Why Workout?

As the New Year is upon us, working out may be on the forefront on most of our minds so we are here to help and make sure you’re working towards your goal with the most efficiency and effectiveness. The trick? Work out in the morning. Here are a few quick facts that may help you skip the snooze.

  • Easily, the rush of endorphins you feel after a great workout boosts your mood and energy. This will start your day off the right way in both your interactions with friends, co-workers, etc. AND you’ll be less likely to snack on junk food in this healthy state of mind.
  • After long hard day at work, it’s nice to get your exercise done since a glass of wine might seem more appealing than a long, hard run. Plus, when you exercise, your body uses glucose that’s stored in your liver for fuel. The problem with alcohol is that when you drink, the alcohol also gets metabolized in your liver (the same one!), which means that alcohol inhibits your ability to use your glucose stores effectively. The result, you’re not going to get the energy you need, and you simply won’t be as good.
  • Simply put, gyms are usually a bit less crowded super early in the morning. Avoid the mayhem if you can.
  • Because when you start your physical routine early, your metabolism is revved up which means you’re going to burn through the food you eat during the day, rather than when you’re sleeping
  • Lastly, this minimizes the excuses and tasks that will be at hand that will likely distract you from ever getting your push-ups and mile run in! Start your day earlier and feel the value from a full day of productivity.

Latest Obsession: Colostrum

I recently spent 2 nights at my family’s house for the holidays. The day before I arrived I found myself getting sick…. cold and sorethroat. My dad, who has become a huge believer in the holistic approach to diet, recommended that I try a colostrum powder he had been taking. All I can say is wow! I was healthy and symptom free in one day!

Colostrum is the “first milk” produced by mammals for their offspring prior to actual milk production. It is loaded with antibodies, immunoglobulins, and other immune-boosting nutrients. It is also known to increase energy levels, protect the intestinal tract, ward off infection, and even reverse aging. (You can also use the powder on your face as a mask)

It is best to take colostrum on an empty stomach with a good amount of water so that it will reach your small intestine without being damaged by saliva and stomach acids. Colostrum is a food more than a supplement, so there are no side effects. Just consume as much as you feel your body needs.

The best way to get colostrum into you is to buy it in powdered or capsule form. Make sure you are buying colostrum from pasture-fed cows that are pesticide and rBST free, and that is processed with very low heat. This is actually one instance where the processed version (although very minimal processing is best) is better for us than the raw version. Raw colostrum needs to be refrigerated and consumed within a reasonably short time. Plus the immune factors of raw colostrum come from just one cow where as processed colostrum comes from a pool of hundreds or thousands of cows and provides a broad spectrum of immune factors.
