Tierney Gearon: World Renown Artist and Photographer

As one of the most influential photographers of our time—having been discovered by Charles Saatchi,Tierney Gearon has established a career capturing moments, timelessly and accurately. Little did I know, before meeting her a few years ago when she took photos for my website, she also traveled the world for half a decade modeling. While she was pursuing her first passion, Ballet in Utah, a European modeling agency discovered her and helped ignite a life into the modeling world. Over time her interests grew and it was through her pastime of taking photos that she was encouraged to extend and grow her skills into and beyond the industry, ultimately to become a professional photographer. Not only does her resume and accolades within photography blow me away, she also is a woman with a powerful story that has inspired me deeply. As a professional working on the other side of the lens—and successfully, it’s apparent she is a woman of true talent. But In addition to it all, her dedication to her family is what I might admire the most. With four beautiful children whom she has evidently encourages to follow their passion no matter what, It’s apparent in the way she speaks of them that they are her gold. When you are in her home you can even feel the free spirit of great energy and greater love and it’s absolutely contagious. I had a chance to catch up with Tierney and ask her a few questions! Here is what we talked about…..

JL: How would you describe your style?
Tierney Gearon: Creative, artistic, bohemian and colorful.

JL: What are your must-have beauty products?
TG: I have terribly dry skin—so all my organic oils are a must.

JL: Do you have any daily rituals that you can’t live without?
TG: Exercise is an absolute must. I mostly hike and do yoga–we also just moved to a beach farm
lifestyle and so my new favorite thing is to walk the goats and sit with the chickens; it keeps me grounded continually.

JL: What has been the most exciting part of your career so far?
TG: Commercial photography wise, the biggest challenge I have ever had to do is when I had to shoot the Oscar Issue for the New York Times Magazine; we had to also shoot little vignette videos. I had an hour to do each person and it was the first time I had ever done film so I had to come up with the concepts and make it all happen. Working with such a large crew was also not easy, I am a one woman show, but we did it and we did an amazing job!

JL: Being a mother of four, how do you balance your work, creativity and motherhood?
TG: I don’t know, some how I just do it! I just don’t think about it. I take care of myself but my children come first hands down.

JL: As a woman who has achieved so much, how important has the support of other women been to your career?
TG: I think the biggest support is the belief in one’s self and taking care of yourself. I know what it feels like to support my female friends and I am very empowered by it, in turn I’m encouraged to support myself.

JL: Who has been most inspirational to you in your work and life?
TG: My own life story. My family and children inspire me.

JL: What advice would you give to other women you wish someone would have told you?
TG: Learn how to take care of yourself and to say “yes” to as much as you can without hurting yourself or others!

Break The Habits

A new month, a new beginning to remind yourself, your skin needs protecting, so here are some tips to refresh your mind with as you step into the new Spring Season and how breaking your habits can make all the difference.

Washing too much

If your skin is dry skin, try and lather up less often, since doing so strips away natural oils. A creamy or oil-based cleanser at night (they’re gentler on dry skin) is best to use and be sure to rinse with just water when you wake up. (This way, you’ll retain more of your own moisturizing oils). Side note: removing make up will always be key in keeping your skin in the best condition.

Turn the TV off

Bright screens have the power to suppress melatonin, a hormone that makes us sleepy and regulates our circadian rhythms. When melatonin levels decrease, your circadian rhythm gets thrown off which make your skin cells work inefficiently, causing more wrinkles and dullness over time. And because sleep is also important when it comes to keeping your skin healthy, try and wind down by reading a book or meditating.

Tell us about your pillow

Speaking of sleep, what kind of pillow do you sleep on? Believe it or not, but our pillows collect oil, dead skin cells, bacteria, and excess night creams so as we toss and turn, all of that is deposited right into our pores. Tip: change your pillowcases at least once a week and also be sure to swap out the regular cotton version for something smoother, like satin, silk, or Egyptian cotton. Rough pillowcases can actually cause wrinkles.

In moderation, your favorite things: alcohol and sugar

Unfortunately, consuming too much sugar, salt, caffeine, and alcohol will show on your face.  Take alcohol, a huge dehydrator and inflamer for your skin. This will consequently make your skin dull and blotchy. In addition, try and avoid sugary foods since they break down collagen and elastin in the skin which can and will produce wrinkles.

Last but not least…

This is often overlooked, but be sure to get your moles check each year. If you’re forgetful, schedule it near events you’ll remember, like your anniversary or birthday. No matter how thorough you may be when examining your own skin, mole checks are nonnegotiable. A little effort for a lot of cause.

Latest Obsession: Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds are a super food that you should know about! When your cells are nourished, your skin glows. These little black seeds are the highest natural source of omega-3s, a type of fatty acid that benefits your skin by helping to strengthen cell membranes’ barriers that allow water and nutrients in while keeping toxins out.

To help you get into our current Chia craze, here are two great recipes. One that will benefit your internal health and for consumption, the other, an application recipe to benefit your skin!

Vanilla Chia Pudding, makes one serving.

2 tablespoons chia seeds

1/2 cup coconut milk

1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

a pinch of salt

1 tablespoon honey

Directions

In a small bowl or jar combine the first four ingredients. Give it a good stir and refrigerate for at least one hour. After the first thirty minutes give the mixture a stir, so it doesn’t clump together. Once you’re ready to eat, stir in the honey (add more if you don’t think it’s sweet enough) and top with your favorite fruit or chopped nuts.

Chia seed face scrub

1/2 cup coconut oil

1 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp chia seeds

Directions

Mix the ingredients together before applying to a damp face. Allow the mixture to set for two minutes before using a wet washcloth to remove. Splash cold water on your face when you’ve finished.

Jan Thoughts: The Oscars

From time to time, we will be sharing a quick thought from our founder, January Olds. To kick off this introductory series, what better way than to talk about the magic that is the Oscars? Here are some glitzy thoughts:

This last Sunday, most circled around their television to watch the annually celebrated Oscars. Whether a movie lover or a fashionista,  I know I loved watching the Oscars because of it’s overall presentation of both beauty and talent. Strangely enough, it’s a time a year I pay extra close attention to skin; yep, of course; I just can’t help it.

A woman who caught my eye specifically was Cate Blanchett. I love her in general for her brilliant acting and presence on film but couldn’t help notice how stunning she was (AND WITH BARELY ANY MAKE UP!)

Cate BlanchettI think that it just proves our philosophy at January Labs… less is more.

Lets perhaps take note from the lovely Cate who has inspired others (and me) in so many ways. Whether it in the media and striving to be a positive influence to women, or it’s the effortless style and poise she so displayed especially a couple nights ago, may we be women who strive and focus on the kind of beauty that is just that. Let’s not try and look younger over looking good and healthy for our age. And let’s remember that beauty is from within–with or without an Oscar in your hand.

As always, we like to keep January Labs users up to date on what is going on with us as a company. A lot of that growth stems around new accounts and we are extremely thankful to continue to grow and couldn’t be more delighted than to have a place in the Northwest corner of the U.S., Seattle, Washington!

With a passion to provide a space for women to unwind, and “reconnect with themselves and their inner deity,” Heather and Stephanie hope Deity Divine Skincare can be a go-to place for many; a place also to share story and to be treated with a spark, so to speak.

7 Powerful Foods for Fabulous Skin

We want to continue to curate your kitchen to be one of the best sources for keeping your skin in its best condition. Granted our products are considerably one of the best ways to do so, we also want to be sure to provide diet information that can also go a long way. See below for a list of some random goods that pack a punch in the fight against keeping your skin in its most  gorgeous condition.

  1. Almonds-This vitamin E brightens and livens up your skin by neutralizing free radicals—molecules that dull your look. In addition, almonds’ fatty acids also make you gleam.
  2. Apricots-This vibrant fruit throws wrinkles into reverse. The vitamin A found in this gem is converted by our bodies to retinol, a compound that helps produce new cells.
  3. Sunflower oil-Even well-hydrated skin can look cracked without this unique oil’s linoleic acid—a  fatty acid that helps create a lax outer layer of cells. Even consider sautéing or baking with it for a baby-smooth complexion.
  4. Whole-wheat bread-The niacin found in whole grains can reduce any redness from acne, rosacea and other skin irritant inducers, and all by its power to inhibit  inflammatory agents.
  5. Salmon-Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, salmon’s healthy fat  hydrates dry patches, and may also help increase the production of collagen and elastin, two essentials for soft, no-flake skin.
  6. Crab-One of our most interesting picks, crab has much to offer—especially with it’s zinc. Crab zinc helps reduce inflammation to decrease any pimple-making damages.
  7. Oranges– The banisher of bags, vitamin C is highly potent in this delicious fruit. Not only does it provide a scent that refreshes, it also strengthens collagen too—which aids the skin’s supportive structure thus lifting sunken areas that create shadows.

The Usual Suspects

There are many things we can assume that will keep our skin well and healthy. But as an avid fan of keeping skin in its best condition, we wanted to share some easily unnoticed suspects that can harm the epidermis.

Over washing— If your skin has been dry lately or feels like it has an extra layer of dead skin built up, it could be because of over-washing. When we over-wash, it dries your skin out, which can lead your sebaceous glands to respond by overproducing. Skin then becomes simultaneously dehydrated and superficially oiled up, leading to breakouts and a rougher surface.

Choosing “maximum strength” ingredients — Just because it’s stronger doesn’t make it always better, and that’s especially true with skin care. For most users, there’s no appreciable difference between the efficacy of low-strength benzoyl peroxide and maximum strength, but the high-strength version is a lot more likely to irritate skin and cause dryness.

Buying an allergenic shampoo or conditioner — If you’re having a bad breakout or notice your skin becoming easily sensitivity be sure to take note of any new products recently purchased—especially hair care. Skin allergies to hair products can also show up on your back, chest, and anywhere else the product is exposed to.

Switching up skin care frequently — Speaking of beauty products, our epidermis is very delicate, and although trying the latest cream or serum might fulfill your desire for something new, it could also throw off your skin’s moisture balance, pH and a slew of other factors. So instead of switching over all at once, introduce new products gradually for the smoothest and healthiest transition.

A List of Treats, Not a Trick

Heading into the holiday season, there will be many occasions where we find our kitchens stocked with goodies. And though our current spooky holiday doesn’t necessarily boast health benefits for our skin (candy is primarily just good for our taste buds) here is a list of foods that can provide a good source of nutrient and benefits for your overall health.

  • Lemon — A common good in the kitchen functions by it’s acidity that can whiten nails, give your hair natural-looking highlights, and help slough off dry, flaky skin.
  • Egg white — For the extra healthy conscious, egg whites can go beyond your omelet and can be used as an egg white mask that can improve tone and texture.
  • Olive oil —A household name as an ingredient that packs a lot of nutrients, olive oil is great for hydrating hair and smooth dry spots on skin.
  • Sugar — The sweetest natural exfoliate, sugar does well when mixed with a little olive oil, almond or apricot oil for a body scrub or great lip.
  • Green tea — To soothe skin, rinse your face in this cool green elixir. This full of antioxidants tea is also helpful for reducing redness and easing stress.
  • Avocado — An excellent moisturizer, avocado is great as a face mask, mashed up in your hair, or used just about anywhere, where a little extra hydration may be needed.
  • Oatmeal — For a fast-acting soother, look no further than oatmeal, which has major anti-inflammatory properties. You can even drop it in the bath, slather it on your face, or even use it as a gentle scrub.
  • Papaya — One of the more unknown goodies in our kitchens, papaya has the power to decongest your skin, and fast! Needless to say, the papain in this fruit makes one of the best enzyme masks around.
  • Honey — This natural antimicrobial also soothes and draws moisture into skin. Use it in masks or as a spot treatment.

Prettyology + January Labs

Screen shot 2013-10-16 at 10.42.14 PM

This week, we want to shift our direction a bit on our blog and want to start spotlighting those who inspire us and encourage our aim to provide healthy and refined skincare that betters the whole self! And we want to kick it off with Julie Michaud Prettyology

A prime example of a likeminded brand to January Labs, Julie Michaud Prettyology has brought upon us great excitement. It’s an honor to share with our readers that we are teaming up with them! More on how, but first, who are they exactly?

Julie Michaud Prettyology’s function and embodiment is a kin to a beauty lab, whose motto of the sorts is simply, “Beauty should be fun and every woman should feel confident in her own skin.” And we agree. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, this is a refreshing brand that craves to educate and provide for women a place to learn about good products and beauty care, it’s only natural such two entities combined forces; a true and good partnership and we are so excited to debut our signature facial that has been customized for them by their lead esthetician Jennifer Chioccariello. This will also be their first gluten-free line too!

This is definitely shareable news so be sure to spread the love and share the knowledge. Until then, we will leave you with founder Julie Michaud’s words of inspiration and the true heart of Julie Michaud Prettyology.

Pretty is empowering. Pretty makes you stand a little taller. Pretty is like an invisible tiara on your head that reminds you that you are someone special.
